Repurposed Functionality – How to Achieve an Industrial Edge in Your Workspace

Industrial interior design is all about embracing the raw and the tactile. It is a style that does not shy away from showing off the bones of a building. These elements bring an authentic, rugged atmosphere to the space, with surfaces that are tactile and multi-textured – think exposed concrete, weathered wood, and corrugated metal. Most of all, materials show their origins. Rough-hewn beams still bear saw marks and brickwork appears salvaged.

Far from cold and unwelcoming, this raw and modern aesthetic promotes informal collaboration in open-plan, dynamic environments – perfect for establishments that value community and teamwork.

Each material layers tactile interest while upholding the industrial principles of simplicity and functionality.

Metals are a cornerstone of this style, with steel, iron, and copper leading the way. These metals can be incorporated easily into existing architecture, as well as the furniture you choose. Take the Auzet Armchair as an example, with a frame made of old anvil steel and vintage faux leather. Available in Vintage Brown, Red or Teal finish.

Glass elements, such as factory windows or glass partitions, add a modern touch while maintaining the open feel of the space, while sheer drapes filter light – try heftier fabrics like canvas, burlap, leather, and denim as a nod to the workwear of the space, and the history of its former use.

Incorporate wooden elements to warm up your industrial space, and add a touch of character, but be sure to opt for reclaimed or rough-hewn surfaces. The Chester Boutique Desk, made from robust dark oak, perfectly captures this repurposed aesthetic. Dark oak finish with varnished brass style frame.

True to their adaptable heritage, industrial interiors prioritise modular, multi-use components. Mobile furniture rolls where needed, reconfiguring on the fly for fluid work modes. Tables and seats cluster for collaboration then separate for focus. Markers and whiteboards adorn glass partitions. Everything is adjustable, flexible, and dynamic, keeping spaces nimble.

Pick items such as this Mobile Caddy Pedestal, in a wide variety of colours to add some visual flair to an otherwise neutral environment.

The Chesterfield Executive Leather Chair is another prime example of industrial (and moveable) chic

The exposed metal framework of the Swift Visitor Chair couples fine geometric lines with contoured comfort, and a light stackable design that promotes flexible arrangements.

Upholstered in distressed leather, the Harland Side Chair gains vintage workwear appeal from its quilted back, exposed joinery, and enduring metal framework. Available in Vintage Red, Blue and Black finish.

The Nova A 2 Person Bench Desk is a modern classic that effortlessly fits into any industrial interior. With its metal ‘A’ type legs and customisable desktop texture, it embodies the industrial ethos of adaptability. The desk also comes flat-packed, offering both style and practicality.

The smooth, electric Smart Height Adjustable Desk empowers users to alternate between sitting and standing, with a modern design that blends seamlessly into industrial interiors.

The Multidesk's slender powder-coated legs allow this modular table to squeeze into small spaces effortlessly, while its hairpin silhouette and customisable colours deliver bold industrial style.

Other signature industrial designs include wire mesh lockers, recycled wood tables, adjustable T-leg workstations, and more.

University of Sussex

In this installation, we contrasted deep green standalone pods with orange soft seating with grey touches matching those found in the exposed concrete of the study hall.

Universities are the perfect setting for these design elements, set across wide-open spaces intended for communal study.
